Apply for a traffic register number

If you are a foreigner in Cape Town who would like to purchase a vehicle, you must apply for a traffic register number if you don’t have a valid foreign identity document.

How to apply

Download and complete the Traffic Register Number (TRN) Application Form from the document downloads section below and submit the form and accompanying documents to your nearest motor vehicle registration centre.

Submit the folliwng documents with your application:

  • a copy of a valid foreign passport
  • a BI-1707 document issued by the Department of Home Affairs (DHA) if you are an asylum seeker or refugee, accompanied by a letter from the DHA authorising the registering authority to issue a TRN
  • two ID photographs
  • proof of address
  • a valid visa/work/study permit.
