City libraries writing the next chapter in phases<p>'Our libraries are among the facilities that have been missed the most during this time and we know our patrons are anxious to once again step into a world of books. Recent regulations allow libraries to open and the City's library services will resume in a phased approach,’ said the City's Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Health, Councillor Zahid Badroodien.</p><p>The reopening will be done in compliance with the Occupational Health & Safety Act and other applicable directives. Library Services will also be guided by the directions issued by the Minister and will inform the public accordingly. <br> <br>'We know that people are keen to visit libraries and our staff will do their best to comply with the demand for library services. However, we request that communities bear with us as we endeavour to safeguard our staff and patrons during this challenging time,' said Councillor Badroodien.</p><p>During the first phase the staff of seven libraries will return and will introduce a drop and collect service in a manner which is safe for both patrons and staff.</p><p>The libraries are Central Library, Wesfleur, Strand, Harare, Mitchells Plain Town Centre, Fish Hoek and Parow. However, library materials from any library in the City can be dropped at these seven libraries.   <br> <br>A drop zone with clear demarcations will be identified at each library, and patrons will be required to adhere to the COVID-19 regulations like wearing masks and practising social distancing when dropping their library materials. The material returned will be quarantined for 72 hours, and will thus remain on the patron’s card for this period, before it is handled by library staff and returned on the system. </p><p>In addition, patrons will be allowed to borrow 20 items at a time for 30 days. This new quota was introduced to enable library patrons to borrow more items for a longer period of time. </p><p>'We share our communities' excitement at being able to access reading material, but we are also mindful of the precautions that need to be taken. For this we ask that patrons bear with us as it is a learning curve for everyone involved. More libraries will slowly come on board as soon as all the necessary safety measures have been met, including the procurement of personal protection equipment for staff. Bellville Library will be the next to open as soon as the current LAN upgrade at the library is completed,' added Councillor Badroodien. </p><p>Patrons can check the online library catalogue at opac.capetown.gov.za for the seven libraries and submit requests for specific books or general material, via e-mail or telephonically. </p><p>The staff will collate the material and call patrons with arrangements to collect the items within two days of their request. </p><p>Patrons can also approach the library and request materials without prior arrangement. </p><p>The service will be available from Monday to Saturday, while a special service for senior citizens (60 years and older) and patrons who are physically challenged will be provided from 09:00 - 10:00 from Monday to Friday. All patrons are welcome to access the service from 10:00 - 16:00 daily during the week; while the Saturday service provision will be from 9:00 - 12:00.</p><p>No fines will be incurred on outstanding material during this time. </p><p>The material borrowed for 30 days can be renewed online for an additional 30 days via the library catalogue (opac.capetown.gov.za) or by calling one of the seven libraries that will be operational. </p><p>The seven libraries can be reached here:</p><table width="100%" class="ms-rteTable-default" cellspacing="0"><tbody><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width:25%;">Library</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width:25%;">Physical Address</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width:25%;">Telephone Number</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default" style="width:25%;">Email address</td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Wesfleur</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Wesfleur Circle, Atlantis</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">021 400 3217</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default"><p style="text-align:justify;">Wesfleur.Library@capetown.gov.za</p><p style="text-align:justify;"> </p></td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Strand</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Mills Street, Strand</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">021 444 3106</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default"><p style="text-align:justify;">Strand.Library@capetown.gov.za</p><p style="text-align:justify;"> </p></td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Harare</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">43 Ncumo Street, Harare, Khayelitsha </td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">021 444 0280</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default"><p style="text-align:justify;">Harare.Library@capetown.gov.za</p><p style="text-align:justify;"> </p></td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Town Centre</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Symphony Way, Town Centre, Mitchell's Plain</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">021 417 0670/5</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default"><p style="text-align:justify;">Mitchellsplain.Library@capetown.gov.za</p><p style="text-align:justify;"> </p></td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Fish Hoek</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Central Circle, Fish Hoek</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">021 400 7101/2</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default"><p style="text-align:justify;">Fishhoek.Library@capetown.gov.za</p><p style="text-align:justify;"> </p></td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Central </td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Drill Hall, Parade Street, Cape Town</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">021 444 0983</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default"><p style="text-align:justify;">Central.Library@capetown.gov.za</p><p style="text-align:justify;"> </p></td></tr><tr><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Parow</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">Corner of McIntyre and 1st Avenue, Parow</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default">021 444 0940</td><td class="ms-rteTable-default"><p style="text-align:justify;">Parow.Library@capetown.gov.za</p><p style="text-align:justify;"> </p><p> </p></td></tr></tbody></table><p> </p><p><strong>End</strong></p>2020-07-02T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#1f61ec30-8889-4114-8411-a3ee8477bc1b;L0|#01f61ec30-8889-4114-8411-a3ee8477bc1b|Libraries;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#85099571-9f47-4aea-8f00-8e1cb3cf04a4;L0|#085099571-9f47-4aea-8f00-8e1cb3cf04a4|Opening days1
