Cape Town’s aviation economy ready for take off

According to the Air Transport Action Group, the global Air Transport sector supports 65.5 million jobs.

In Cape Town, the aviation economy is a crucial driver of economic growth. The CTIA has already contributed R4,7 billion to the South African economy and supported over 43 000 direct, indirect and induced jobs. I am very pleased that they are now welcoming 110 flights per day while adhering to strict COVID-19 protocols.

Connectivity forms part of the City’s Tourism Development Framework 2024 and our objective is to connect Cape Town with key destinations in Africa and globally. Connecting Cape Town to more cities and countries creates more jobs through tourism and also provides trade opportunities to export more proudly Cape Town products to the rest of the world.

Together with our strategic business partners, we are implementing recovery plans for this crucial sector and have renewed funding for the successful Cape Town Air Access (CTAA) initiative, located in WESGRO, to ensure we get the aviation sector back on its feet.

Other key aspects of our recovery plans include rebuilding confidence in air travel and the expansion of air cargo so that we can export our locally produced goods to compete on the world stage, thereby supporting local businesses and the sustainability of employment in this sector

Throughout the various stages of lockdown, I visited the Cape Town International Airport and have been very impressed with the readiness of the airport as well as the significant health and safety COVID-19 protocols in place to protect staff and travellers. Everyone, including locals and visitors, are also reminded to adhere to COVID-19 protocols, such as wearing your masks, washing or sanitising your hands and practising social distancing.

I can confidently say Cape Town is ready to welcome visitors safely to the Mother City.

The City of Cape Town and our official Destination Marketing Organisation, Cape Town Tourism (CTT), have partnered with the likes of TravelStart and Flight Centre to breathe life back into our tourism industry and, equally as important, the sectors that underpin the tourism industry, such as food and beverage, accommodation, transportation, events as well as goods and services.

Our recovery plans also include investing in airport branding in our key source markets so that Cape Town is top of mind for domestic and international travellers.

This includes targeted messaging to the domestic market to encourage local visitors to come to Cape Town. For our international markets, we will soon be launching an exciting campaign to entice travellers to combine business and leisure travel and come to Cape Town for a workcation.

I am confident that together with our official tourism agency, combined with the recovery plans we have in place, we will come back from this crisis, stronger than before and ready to share the abundant experiences Cape Town has on offer.

End

2020-12-05T22:00:00ZGP0|#1d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70;L0|#01d539e44-7c8c-4646-887d-386dc1d95d70|City news;GTSet|#62efe227-07aa-45e7-944c-ceebacca891dGP0|#df206c9e-4022-471e-bcc4-9566e26cf54f;L0|#0df206c9e-4022-471e-bcc4-9566e26cf54f|Airport Industria;GTSet|#2e3de6c1-9951-4747-8f53-470629a399bb;GP0|#0f794aab-8ac2-46f6-8dda-f97adf1462bd;L0|#00f794aab-8ac2-46f6-8dda-f97adf1462bd|tourism10
