Arne Purves (Environmental Management) and Katrin Ludynia (Research Manager at SANCCOB) presented this item.
They presented a power point slide describing the status of the African penguin and the work that was being done by the City of Cape Town, and SANCCOB, from a “Simons Town Perspective”.
The following topics were discussed:
•The distribution of the African penguin
•Current threats to the penguins
•Population Numbers (Less than 3% of the historic population left in the world)
•Monitoring of penguins
•Residential sweeps conducted by penguin monitors
•Residential clearances and SANCCOB statistics
•SANCOBB admissions
•Regular releases by SANCCOB at Boulders
•Transponder work
•The Penguin Festival
•Landscape Master Plan
Ald Purchase thanked and commended SANCCOB and the Environmental Management team for the work they were doing in the area.
Cllr Liell-Cock further thanked SANCOBB for the amount of penguins they rescued and reminded the public of the importance of the penguins to the tourism economy. He also thanked the department and organisation for the innovativeness and their will to work productively as a team.
