Reminder of public meeting about revitalising Main Rd in Rondebosch Reminder of public meeting about revitalising Main Rd in Rondebosch The City is calling on residents and stakeholders to collaborate with us on a new vision for Main Road in the Rondebosch central business district
The purpose of this project is to revitalise the section of Main Road between Belmont Road and Woolsack Road, and all interested and affected parties have the opportunity to submit their proposals by Monday, 29 June 2026.

All are encouraged to attend the public open day at the Mowbray Town Hall, Main Road, on Wednesday, 17 June from 17:00 to 19:00

More information about this project is available on the City’s website

Main Road (M4) in the Rondebosch CBD is one of Cape Town’s historic transport routes. It connects surrounding suburbs, facilitates movement through the business area for vehicles and pedestrians, delivery bikes and public transport users, and is a hub of economic and social activity.

The section of Main Road between Belmont Road and Woolsack Road features the Baxter Theatre to the north, Rustenburg High, residences for students, small shops, educational facilities, restaurants, and the Rondebosch Main Shopping Centre to the south.

‘Main Road is a historic road and when this road was established many years ago, the city looked very different. People’s needs were different, and at the time we did not have online orders and grocery deliveries, and so forth. But over the past few decades, we have seen an increase in new development, changes in land use, and more visitors and activities. But Main Road is still very much the Main Road from decades ago in terms of its infrastructure and how it operates, and this is what we are trying to address with this process.

‘We want to see a road that facilitates different uses in the appropriate locations. So, if we talk about pedestrians, we want to see sidewalks that are wide, safe, and appropriate for the volume of pedestrian traffic and this includes safety – it could be raised pedestrian crossings, and bump-outs like we have in the Cape Town CBD.

‘We need parking for delivery bikes as this need has grown exceptionally with the growth in online grocery shopping since Covid. And then of course, you need the road to also facilitate vehicular movement. All of these features will need to interact in a way that improves the experience for all users, as much as possible.

‘I encourage residents and stakeholders to attend the information day, and to participate in this collaboration. Tell us what you think should happen along Main Road, what it should look like to make it work. We will then use the input to fine-tune the concept plan into a detailed design,’ said the City’s Deputy Mayor and Mayoral Committee Member for Spatial Planning and Environment, Alderman Eddie Andrews.

How to submit comments

Complete the comment form and submit it to the City

Email Customer.Interface@capetown.gov.za

Online using the City's website

In person at the Subcouncil 20 office: Alphen Centre, Constantia Main Road, Constantia

The closing date for comments and proposals is 29 June 2026

Caption: The City is hosting a public participation process about interventions to revitalise Main Road in Rondebosch between the intersections with Woolsack Road and Belmont Road.

End

2026-06-11T22:00:00Z1
