Our focus this year includes pedestrian safety (with an emphasis on scholar patrols), as well as passenger, motorist and cyclist safety.

Overview

The Urban Mobility Directorate manages Cape Town’s largest asset: an extensive road network spanning over 11 000 kilometres. We are also the custodian of the MyCiTi bus service. This Transport Month, our focus is on road user safety and educating the public on how to use the road responsibly.

Throughout October, we will be hosting various activations across the city to promote awareness and encourage safe behaviour on our roads.

What to expect

Scholar Safety

We are kicking off Transport Month 2025 (TM25) with an activation focused on primary school learners. In partnership with the Safety and Security Directorate, we will host a road safety demonstration at the Learner Traffic Centre in Mitchells Plain at 09:00 on 1 October 2025.

Cyclist Safety

We are taking TM25 to the streets of Khayelitsha in partnership with Khaltsha Cycles, the Pedal Power Association (PPA) and BEN Bikes. Together, we will promote safer cycling by demonstrating road safety tips and encouraging a culture of responsible cycling. Join us at 12:00 on 8 October 2025 for this special ride and help us pedal the road safety message forward.

Passenger Safety

Passenger safety is at the heart of our campaign. Every day, thousands of people rely on public transport, and it is our responsibility to ensure safe and dignified journeys. This year, we are raising awareness about safe travel behaviour, engaging directly with commuters and passengers to promote responsible and safer travelling choices. Together, we can build a culture of safety, protect lives and ensure that everyone reaches their destination safely.

Cyclist and Pedestrian Safety

As a part of Transport Month 2025, the Urban Mobility Directorate will be hosting a guided cycle tour through the central CBD on 23 October 2025 from 12:00 to 14:00.

The activation will be in partnership with Young Urbanists, the Pedal Power Association (PPA) and BEN Bikes, the tour will highlight key locations in the CBD while the line department discusses challenges and solutions on improving safety and accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians. This is an opportunity for stakeholders to ride, learn and contribute towards creating safer spaces for all road users.

Pedestrian Safety

Pedestrian safety is one of the key messages we are highlighting throughout this Transport Month. Every day, two people die on our roads and we want to educate all pedestrians on how to stay safe and act responsibly. As part of this pedestrian safety, we are supporting the Open Langa event taking place on Sunday, 26 October 2025, from noon. This event will focus on pedestrian safety and will transform the streets of Langa into a festive, car-free space filled with art, music, activities, and local enterprises.

Motorist Safety

Urban Mobility plays a crucial role in keeping our roads safe and traffic flowing, but we cannot do it alone. We call on all motorists to drive responsibly, respect traffic laws, and avoid blocking intersections. Join us at 10:00 on 31 October 2025 at the Civic Centre Station. Be the change behind the wheel, help us create safer, more respectful roads for all.

Activation programme

Theme

Date

Time

Venue

Scholar Safety

1 October

09:00

Mitchells Plain Learner Traffic Centre,
Weltevreden Road, Mitchells Plain

Cyclist Safety

8 October

12:00

Khaltsha Cycles,
1 Julius Tsolo Street, Khayelitsha

Pedestrian Safety

26 October

12:00

King Langa,
Libalele and Lerotholi Avenue,
Langa

Motorist Safety

31 October

10:00

Civic Centre Station, Heerengracht Boulevard, Cape Town

Stay connected

Follow us for the latest updates, news, and insights:

Twitter

Facebook

LinkedIn

#TransportMonth25 #RoadSafetyMatters

Contact us

General enquiries: transport.info@capetown.gov.za

GP0|#d99edbe2-6561-4f49-bdbd-0a40d5b3ff8b;L0|#0d99edbe2-6561-4f49-bdbd-0a40d5b3ff8b|Transport Month;GTSet|#dc1a8a1b-0357-45bc-b768-7d9a89c8ef94;GPP|#780150fb-25ca-42e5-8afb-af3efe7e13a3Join us as we highlight road safety for all users of our road network. 0
