City supports SPAR Women’s Grand Prix race finale | City supports SPAR Women’s Grand Prix race finale | | <img alt="" src="https://resource.capetown.gov.za/cityassets/PublishingImages/Former%20Mayors%20Header.jpg" style="BORDER:0px solid;" /> | <p>Cape Town is hosting the final leg of the SPAR Women’s Grand Prix Series on Sunday 23 October 2022. The City of Cape Town is one of the sponsors for the event taking place at the Green Point Precinct.</p><p><br></p> | <p>Approximately 500 runners, including some of the continent’s elite athletes, are expected to take part in the race on Sunday. </p><p>Athletes will follow a 10km looping route that will take them from Vlei Road, Beach Road in Sea Point to Granger Bay Boulevard in Mouille Point before finishing at the Green Point Athletics Stadium Pavilion.</p><div>The SPAR Women’s Challenge, organised by the Western Province Athletics, is the largest road running race for women in South Africa, with Cape Town being one of the largest of the five races across the country.<br></div><div><br></div><div>The City is supporting the event by providing municipal services and waiver of costs for the use of City-owned venues. </div><div><br></div><div>‘Our partnership with the Cape Town SPAR Grand Prix event goes back many years and it is part of the City’s commitment to enabling women’s sports and providing more opportunities for female athletes to showcase their abilities. In addition, we want to encourage a healthy lifestyle among those in our city and this event obviously also presents a fun day out for athletes who will be looking to achieve their personal bests. <br></div><div><br></div><div>‘We are deploying our Safety and Security services on race day to ensure the event runs smoothly, and to ensure traffic management in areas that will be impacted by the race route,’ said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Safety and Security Alderman JP Smith. </div><div><br></div><div>‘Hosting such a prestigious race shows that the City of Cape Town is a capable and popular world class event destination.
