This R434 million facility marks a major milestone in the City’s efforts to divert recyclable materials from landfill by reselling these back to manufacturers to produce new products. The Mayor was joined by Alderman Grant Twigg, the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Urban Waste Management.
|
The state-of-the-art facility is designed to receive recyclables collected through the City’s door-to-door recycling collections programme. The mixed recyclables – such as plastics, paper, cardboard, glass and metals – are then separated and prepared for re-sale to manufacturing industries where they are used to produce new products.

This forms part of the City’s long-term strategy to increase recycling and extend the lifespan of landfill sites by recovering valuable materials from the waste stream before they are disposed of.

Sixty Capetonians are already employed at the recycling facility, with another 20 staff working at the collection point, and this will grow to around 160 jobs at full operation (with more downstream in the manufacturing chain), while significantly increasing the amount of waste diverted from landfill.

‘This Coastal Park facility is a major step forward in the City’s journey towards better waste management and a robust recycling economy. By recovering recyclable materials before they reach landfill, we are extending the life of landfills and saving public money. We are also helping the environment and creating 160 jobs in the process,’ said Mayor Hill-Lewis.

It supports our separation-at-source programme and helps ensure that materials with economic value are recovered and returned to the economy rather than being lost to landfill,’ said Alderman Twigg.

Residents encouraged to separate recyclables

The City encourages residents to continue separating their recyclable materials at home and to make use of available recycling services and drop-off facilities.

By separating recyclable materials such as paper, cardboard, plastics, tins and glass from general waste, residents can help ensure that valuable resources are recovered and reused.
