Youth and Family Development Centre and Tafelsig public space upgrade
The Youth and Family Centre in Tafelsig, Mitchells Plain was launched on 20 November 2010.

The development of the centre was an anchor project and was financed through a partnership between BP Multi-national, Mitshibisi, Province Department of Social Development and the City of Cape Town. The funding from the private sector for the project was sourced by former president Nelson Mandela.

The departments of Urban Renewal and Sport and Recreation pooled their resources together and the centre was officially opened by the Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Alderman Dan Plato.

Mr George Penxa (URP Director) welcomed the community, councillors, officials and media. In his opening remarks Councillor Sheval Arendse (ward 82) indicated that the community has waited a long time for this day. Before there was only bush and now there is appreciation and happiness about the centre. He encouraged the community to make use of the facility and not to let it stand still.

In his key note address, Mayoral Committee member, Alderman Gavin Cavanagh, indicated that the community can now boast about the landmark on AZ Berman to family and friends. This facility is a legacy that will resonate in the minds and spirit of the community. Mr Gert Bam (Director for Sport and Recreation) also presided over proceeding.

The Mayor encouraged the youth to use the opportunities that the facility provides. Sometimes there are problems like drugs and teenage pregnancies but there are solutions and they should make the right choices. They should acknowledge where they come from and the community must take hands in fighting drugs and crime.

A vote of thanks was delivered by Cllr Sheval Arendse.

The launch was attended by occupants of the centre and a number of organisations. Entertaining the guests were groups such as the Searidge Fitness Club and Devolution Dance group. Organisations included the Down Syndrome Association, Isango Institute Youth Development, Greater Bulls who plays wheelchair basketball and other sport codes, Matrix Substance Abuse Centre, Parent Centre, Mitchell’s Plain Care Centre and Tafelsig Sunrise Seniors Club etc.
