The remodelling of Lentegeur and Mandalay transport interchange 

Lentegeur and Mandalay stations are being upgraded to make them accessible to disabled people and to develop attractive forecourts which beautify the facilities and support the economic development initiative. The project is linked to the construction of the Western Cape Rehabilitation Centre.

Components of this project that have been completed:
Status as at November 2011: 

  • Eastern terminal 
  • Public space upgrade 
  • Landscaping and footways 
  • Mandalay Station upgrade 
  • CCTV cameras 
  • Upgrade to the clinic

Phase 1 of the project is completed. The components are: 

  • Construction of two traffic circles/medians 
  • Taxi embayments 
  • Construction of centre islands 
  • Signage 
  • 400 metres of widening of Merrydale Road 
  • Non-motorised transport 
  • Landscaping 
  • Place making 
  • Public furniture

The project, as at November 2011, is 30% completed. The value of the project is R6.5 million.

Phase 2 - upgrade of Lentegeur Western Forecourt
Status as at November 2011: 

  • Shar Civil appointed for Phase 2 
  • Upgrade of western forecourt civil works 
  • Landscaping and greening 
  • Ablution facilities 
  • Parking area 
  • Upgrading of informal traders facilities 
  • Station upgrade

Phase 3 - Lentegeur upgrade of public open spaces and civic office
Status as at November 2011: 

  • The project is currently in the design development stage 
  • BTKM consultant has been appointed 
  • Designs were completed by September 2011 
  • Supply Chain process commenced in October 2011 and envisaged completion is by January 2012

The value of the professional team is currently at R850 000.

Construction of the Lentegeur SAPS and Forensic Laboratory
Status as at November 2011: 

  • Project has commenced. 
  • The construction will be for period of 24 months. 
  • The appointed contractor is Good Hope Construction.

The project, as at November 2011, is 30% completed. The value of the project R75 million. URP facilitated funding for the appointment from the Department of Public Works. Six local subcontractors and 40 labourers were appointed, and five trades to local contractors were facilitated.
