This project was initiated because of the problems experienced with illegal dumping in the Mitchells Plain community. It is a collaboration between the City of Cape Town’s Department of Solid Waste and the Urban Renewal Programme.
Solid Waste is contributing R1 000 000 towards construction of the project, with approximately R10 000 000 annual costs towards maintenance and operations. The contribution of the Urban Renewal Programme is R4 000 000 over a three year period.
The tender for the construction of the Spine Road Drop-off facility was advertised, and Abantu Civils was appointed. The project is progressing as planned.
The development of the facility consists of the following components:
- Waste drop-off facility
- Training facility
- Buyback centre
- Recycling plant
- Landscaping
- Wood chipping
- Ablutions
- Offices
- Security
