A model building and drawing competition in primary and secondary schools in Mitchells Plain took place from July to 0ctober 2009. The objective of the project was to create awareness about the engineering fields amongst school learners, based on the Southern Terminal Transport Interchange at the town centre in Mitchells Plain. The five primary schools’ learners were tasked to draw the Southern Terminal that was being constructed at the time. The five secondary schools’ learners were challenged to build a model of the terminal.

Preparation for the project started well in advance and evolved as follows:
- Visits were made to local schools to get buy in for the project
- Site visits were organised for learners to view the Northern and Southern Terminal projects
- Presentations were done to learners by consultants involved in the Southern Terminal Development
- Schools werevisited to view to the projects as they unfolded
Seven schools completed their projects - Caravelle Primary, Littlewood Primary, Beacon Training Centre (school for mentally challenged learners), Westville Primary School, Phillipi Secondary, Princeton Secondary and Cedar Secondary school. The projects were submitted and assessed by Faizel Moosa (Project Manager), Mallville Swanson (CCT – Department of Transport) and Ivan Anthony (Urban Renewal Programme).
The assessment of the projects took place on 23 November 2009 and the prize-giving ceremony took place on 30 November 2009, in the boardroom at the Southern Terminal. George Penxa, Director for the Urban Renewal Programme, was the Programme Director and the Subcouncil Chairperson and Natalie Bent addressed the learners at the ceremony.

The winning schools in the drawing section were:
- 1st: Caravelle Primary (R2 500. 00)
- 2nd: Westville Primary (R1 500. 00)
- 3rd: Littlewood Primary (R750. 00)
The winning schools in the model building section were:
- 1st: Cedar Secondary School (R5 000. 00)
- 2nd: Princeton Secondary (R2 500. 00)
- 3rd: Philippi Secondary (R1 000. 00)
There were some challenges experienced during the project including a lack of funding and the timing of the project. Consultants involved in the Southern Terminal Development contributed financially towards the implementation of the project and the school examinations contributed to the decision of some schools to pull out. The project can be replicated to other schools and different projects but requires funding commitments.
