Khayelitsha rail extension project

An anchor project is a multi-tiered project that attracts a large proportion of URP investment and makes an impact on a significant number of people.

The Khayelitsha Central Business District

Khayelitsha - Retail centre

This project is establishing a mixed-use, viable and vibrant Central Business District (CBD) for the residents of Khayelitsha, in which the local community participates and is empowered to take up economic opportunities.

The rail extension (view video)

The South African Railway Commuter Corporation in partnership with the City of Cape Town is responsible for this project and is extending the present Khayelitsha rail line for 4,2 km, constructing two train stations, four pedestrian bridges, four road-over-rail bridges and two public transport interchanges.

Khayelitsha - Youth Clinic

This initiative is aimed at improving the health of the people of Khayelitsha, by ensuring adequate access to health services and reducing the incidence of HIV and AIDS.

This project aims to accelerate housing developments in Khayelitsha by facilitating rapid land release for integrated human settlements, promoting housing densities and upgrading existing informal settlements.

Monwabisi Coastal Resort Development

This is a mixed-use development anchored by the coastal resort development. The project has secured a total funding of R103 million from the Neighbourhood Development Partnership Grant (NDPG) and R3,6 million from the Equitable Share funding. The project is currently at a planning stage.

Mitchells Plain CBD and transport interchange

 This project involves the development and regeneration of the Mitchells Plain Central Business District (CBD) and transport interchange through public investment from all spheres of government. The project includes a new retail centre, new administrative buildings, new roads and a new market for informal traders. The aim is to create an enabling environment for sustainable private sector development.

Mitchells Plain Lentegeur station

The remodelling of Lentegeur and Mandalay transport interchange

Lentegeur and Mandalay stations are being remodelled to create universal access and to develop an attractive station forecourt to ensure that economic development is facilitated and sustained.

Youth and Family Development Centre and Tafelsig public space upgrade

The objective of this project is to provide dignified public spaces associated with the housing projects and the Youth and Family Development Centre. It includes hard and soft landscaping, improved lighting, improved public transport facilities, a multi-purpose centre and opportunities for informal trading.

Mitchells Plain - Swartklip multi-purpose sports complex

The Swartklip Regional Sports Facility (view video)

This development of an integrated regional sports facility at the corner of Swartklip and Spine Roads in Tafelsig ensures accessibility for both the Mitchells Plain and Khayelitsha communities. The facility will serve as a practice venue for the 2010 Soccer World Cup and aims to promote sport within the Urban Renewal Programme as one of the measures to uplift communities, especially vulnerable groups such as the youth.

Mitchells Plain District Hospital

A new Mitchells Plain District Hospital will provide an initial 230 to 300 beds and a wide range of services. The plans are currently being reviewed and the expected cost will be approximately R394 million. Construction started in January 2010.
