City of Cape Town

Indicator

Incidence of commercial and/or industrial crime

Description

The number of commercial and/or industrial crimes and thefts reported per 100,000 of the population per year. Crime and theft in this indicator refers to both white collar crime and armed robberies and burglaries at business premises.

Existing Trends

Significance

There was a steady decrease in the number of reported commercial and/or industrial crime from 2001/2002 to 2005/2006.  There was a significant increase in 2006/2007 and again in 2007/2008.  The rate for Cape Town is consistently higher than the national rate.

Implications

This type of crime negatively impacts on economic development in the City because if business premises are perceived to be unsafe and insecure by national and international investors, they will be less inclined to invest in the Cape Town. The decrease in the number of reported cases until 2005/2006 is encouraging as it showed that crime of this nature was being brought under control in Cape Town.  However it has increased significantly since 2006/2007.
