Proposed new landfill sites

Two new sites are being considered: one is south of Atlantis within the Koeberg nuclear exclusion zone, and the other is at Kalbaskraal near Philadelphia.

Thirteen specialist studies have been conducted on these two sites at a cost of more than R6 million, in terms of the Environmental Impact Assessment regulations, and the City is now awaiting a Record of Decision. The City estimates that the final expenditure will be between R1,2 and R2 billion. To construct a lined cell, for example, ranges from R2,5 to 4 million per hectare, depending on conditions that may require additional engineering.
