Draft: Integrated Waste Management By-law
The provision of services and the regulation of all activities regarding waste are essential in terms of Local government and Environmental statutes. The City of Cape Town has drafted an Integrated Waste Management (IWM) By-law, to meet these objectives. The new by-law will also incorporate requirements to reduce waste as part of the Council’s process to align with national policy on integrated pollution and waste management.
This process is also part of its municipal by-law reform programme since being established as a metropolitan municipality on 5 December, 2000. Once promulgated, the IWM by-law will replace all by-laws of previous administrations.
You are invited to comment on the provision of the draft by-law. Copies of the document will be available:
- At your nearest library;
- At your nearest sub-council office;
- From the Council’s website at ; or
- On request via e-mail from Pauline.Horn@capetown.gov.za
Hard copies may be collected on request at the Solid Waste Management Dept, 19th Floor, Civic Centre, 12 Hertzog Boulevard, Cape Town, from Pauline Horn.
The draft IWM by-law will be discussed at Sub-council meetings during May 2008, where input will also be received. Written copies of input must be handed in at Sub-council offices. Notice of these meetings will be advertised elsewhere in the press.
Eight public hearings and a special hearing for members of the waste management industry will also be held at the following venues and times as part of the public participation process on the new by-law.
