Stellenbosch Municipality in collaboration with the City of Cape Town Parks Department and the Institute for Environment and Recreation Management (IERM) Western Cape branch will be hosting the first ‘South African’ World Parks Day event. Members from the various municipalities of the IERM have collaborated to put together an exciting program which will integrate various initiatives to increase the focus, purpose and value of our parks and public open spaces.
A 5km fun walk is planned for 24 September 2009 - Heritage Day, better known as national “Braai Day”. Parks and public open spaces in the area will form the key focus of the day and various themed activities are planned on these spaces. A leisurely, circular route fun walk from a nature park along a public open space bordering a river unto a park area is planned. The route is easily accessible to wheelchair
and prams and is an ideal family activity.
The theme for the event is ‘Our Parks, Our Space’.
Each pit stop is themed according to what suites the space the best eg: Along the river: art and music, a reptile show and laughing yoga, at the nature park: a guided nature walk with the option of picnicking and braaiing and at the end of the walk: sport, fun and games on the park.
Parking will be available outside the Jan Marais Park. Registration is free.
