River Clean and Green

River cleaningCleansing of the Blomvlei River, the Lotus River and the Khayelitsha Wetlands.
In response to the poor state of rivers and wetlands in South Africa, the Provincial Department of Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in partnership with the City provided funding to upgrade and clean the Blomvlei Canal in Athlone, the Big Lotus River in Guguletu and the Khayelitsha Wetlands Park.

The aims of the project are:
  • To clean, green and establish waterways that ensure public health and safety while providing a valuable recreational and visual resource;
  • To deliver outcomes that make a positive contribution towards urban renewal through improved river environments and use of these areas as amenities to the benefit of society;
  • To deliver actual rehabilitation and remediation of these sites;
  • To provide jobs, skills development and enhance tourism opportunities;
  • To raise awareness and encourage schools and civil society to participate in environmental campaigns, projects and programmes; and
  • To optimise the use of the local recreation space for social, economic, cultural and recreational activities.
