Technology
MyCiTi’s state-of-the art technology makes for much quicker, safer and more pleasant journeys than is possible on previously existing public transport services. MyCiTi buses are quiet, and conform to string Euro IV and, more recently, Euro V emissions standards. Automatic fare collection using the myconnect card enables passengers to board swiftly, with no need for the driver to give out tickets and change, which enables the vehicles to make efficient progress and stick to their timetables. The location of each bus is monitored by a centralised control centre, with Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) such as automatic vehicle location, and there are CCTV cameras on the buses and at stations ensure passengers’ safety.

A host of innovative technologies are employed to ensure universal access, so that special needs groups can use the system, among them the disabled, young children, the elderly, pregnant women and people carrying heavy luggage. These technologies include tactile paving, special boarding bridges on each bus to ensure level boarding, ramps onto each station and bus stop, audio signals at intersections outside every station, and tactile signage and maps.
