Have your say! Comment on IRT/MyCiTi Business Plan before 31 August
The public
are invited to comment on the City's latest business plan for the MyCiTi Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) system. The deadline for comments is Tuesday, 31 August 2010. The IRT system is an initiative aimed at transforming public transport by integrating train, minibus taxi and bus services into a systemic whole.

An important component is Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), the specially designated bus service that operates in segregated bus lanes along major routes in Cape Town. These are served by feeder buses which deliver passengers to purpose built MyCiti bus stations. Pedestrian and bicycle facilities will also be upgraded.

Residents will by now be familiar with the blue and red logo of the MyCiti buses that began operating in the new bus lanes before the 2010 FIFA World Cup. These buses were integral to Cape Town’s successful hosting of the tournament.

From 11 June until 11 July over 140 000 ticket holders were transported between the stadium and the city centre on match days, and there were 28 000 passenger trips on the inner city loop and the airport service.

The stadium-city service was complemented by additional bus services in the inner city (including an inner city loop and a service to Hout Bay) and an airport link to the city centre.

These services form part of Phase 1A of the IRT system, which focuses on the BRT component.

In late July 2010 Council unanimously approved an updated version of the MyCiTi Business Plan for public consultation and for submission to National Government. To help make this plan representative of the views of the people of Cape Town, residents’ input is vital. The City aims to finalise and adopt the revised plan by October 2010.

The plan, including an overview, can be downloaded here. If you would like it to be e-mailed to you, please contact Beverley Ball at beverley.ball@capetown.gov.za or call her on 021 400 9139. The plan is also available at the City’s municipal offices and libraries.
