Extensive public education and awareness programmes, supported by a range of
promotional materials, are presented at schools, libraries, shopping malls and
community events to promote the correct use of the service. These programmes are
conducted not only to create awareness of the number but also as part of the effort to
curtail the abuse of emergency numbers and services. Currently only approximately
12% of the calls processed each month constitute actual emergency incidents.
Wally 107
Wally 107 is our mascot! He travels throughout the Cape Metropolitan area to educate
the public about using the special 107 emergency number for emergency calls. Wally
visits shopping centres, schools and exhibitions. He also warns children about the danger
of making hoax calls.

Events attended
Wally 107 visited over 400 000 pupils in the Western Cape during 2007. Wally 107 and his
emergency friends would like to thank all the schools, libraries and creches for their
hospitality during this time. To view photos of Wally 107 and his friends please visit our
photo gallery.
Some of the events Wally attended include The Getaway Show and the annual turning on of
the Christmas lights in Cape Town. We are especially proud of the 107 video and the
activity books that we have produced for primary school children and we hope to
continue developing further learning materials in the year to come.
