How to save: Appliances

Q: Does a new fridge/washing machine/freezer/dishwasher use less electricity than an old one?
A: A large focus of new technologies is improved efficiency. It is recommended that you check the electricity consumption of any new appliance before you buy it. Check the international energy rating labels and always try to buy an ‘energy smart’ model. With televisions, however, unlike most modern appliances which use less electricity, newer plasma screen TVs tend to use more than older models.

Q: Must we switch off appliances, or turn off the electricity at the wall?
A: Yes. If you’re not using it, switch it off. Appliances on standby may still consume as much as 50% of the electricity they would normally use. Switching appliances off at the wall does not reduce their lifespan. Items such as kettles or toasters have electrical breaks in their circuits, and don’t have to be unplugged. Switching off your PC does not shorten its lifespan. Powering down your PC may actually extend its lifespan by reducing its intake of dust, which can cause fans to seize up or parts of circuit boards to overheat. Modern computers are designed to handle 40 000 on/off cycles before failure, and you’re not likely to approach that number during the average PC's 5-7 year life span. Some studies indicate it would require on/off switching every five minutes in order to harm the hard drive.

Q: Do we have to compromise our quality of life/ lifestyle in order to increase energy-efficiency?
A: Not at all… Adopting an energy-saving attitude will help safeguard the environment, save money, and ensure energy security, thus having a positive effect on your life.

Q: Is it worth buying new energy-efficient appliances?
A: Yes it is. As technology advances, appliances are becoming increasingly efficient. Also, with increasing electricity tariffs, investing in energy-efficient appliances is definitely viable, as they pay back in terms of cost savings even more quickly than before.

Q: How can I identify energy-efficient appliances?
A: Look for labelling such as the Energy Star rating. Ask the sales assistant to help.
