How I saveVictor Jones, Cape Town
‘On my salary – like most people, of course – I’ve always looked for ways to save money. Since compact florescent lamps came out, I’ve used them – I swapped my old lamps when the City offered us a way to exchange them, in 2006 it was. And since then, I’ve been a member of “the light police” – that’s what my family say: “Switch off, open the blinds, go outside…” ‘I’ve always liked to cook with gas, so that was an easy change to make from electricity.
‘Our solar water heater is a new addition, but it’s easy. It’s a once-off quick-quick thing, it’s on the roof and we don’t have to think anymore. In ten years we’ll have saved enough money on electricity to have paid for it – maybe more, with how prices are going!’
