The City of Cape Town's Electrical Support Services (ESS) last year received a number of awards in recognition of its commitment to quality management and outstanding results, including the prestigious SABS President’s Award for outstanding organisational performance.
ESS won the 2010 South African Bureau of Standards (SABS) President's Award at a gala dinner in Johannesburg in October 2010. This award is given annually to an ISO accredited organisation which has shown excellence in business growth, productivity and continuous improvement.
This was the first time that a non-private enterprise has received the award.
According to Floris Mostert, Head: Electrical Support Services, the department took just 12 months to achieve certification by the SABS to the SABS ISO 9001, ISO 14 001 and OHSAS 18 001 standards. ESS first achieved certification to these standards in December 2007.
"In 2007, ESS completed a modest total of 231 work orders for the municipality. Over the past financial year, ESS has completed more than 6000 work orders, representing business growth of 2500% in just five years.
"This dramatic turnaround started when ESS made a company-wide commitment to quality management," she said, adding that the benefits of implementing quality management systems are not limited to business growth and higher turnover.
"ESS has also attained a customer satisfaction rating of 97% over the past financial year, along with a threefold increase in employee engagement rating. During 2010, ESS was successfully re-certified to the integrated management system standards, and looks forward to continued business growth and improvement into the future."
Mostert said the SABS Presidents award is benchmarked against many factors including business growth, improved productivity and especially measured against ISO standards which are international standards.
"This is the highest accolade that anyone can get from the South African Bureau of Standards. It is adjudicated by a panel of experts and in this year there were 33 companies - 32 of them were private enterprises and one public sector namely ESS.
"From the 33 companies, three companies were nominated for the finals. We were selected by the panel of experts as the ultimate winner of the President’s award. This was handed over by the CEO of SABS as the final and most prestigious award of the evening."
The department also received the 2010 Pragma Africa ACC@Client Gold Award and Public Sector Award, and the 2010 Pragma CEO Award, which is given to the best client from a total of 155 Pragma clients across all sectors.
Pragma is a global engineering company that provides physical asset management improvement services and products to its clients.
The awards were presented at a formal gala event at Lagoon Beach Hotel in Cape Town in May 2010 following the two-day Pragma Physical Asset Management Thought Leadership Conference, which was the biggest of its kind in Africa.
No other organisations shared these awards, which recognised the department's compliance to the PragmaWay, and organisational performance.
