The City of Cape Town's Green Map has won a Golden Leaf Award for green websites.

This accolade, from the Golden Trash Awards, recognises the role the City's Green Map and Green Goal 2010 Legacy Project is playing in promoting Cape Town's unique environmental standing and keeping green issues in the public arena.

The Green Map highlights Cape Town's growing green and sustainable living consciousness, including green projects, eco products and services, attractions, markets, events, accommodation, alternative energy sites, recycling projects and responsible tourism.

The Green Goal initiative, to green the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, gave rise to the Green Map project.

It allows users to explore interactive green sites, share suggested listings, add comments, post current issues or events or join in as a mapmaker, in a collective effort to chart the natural, cultural and sustainable living sites in Cape Town.

The Cape Town Green Map comprises both the website and a printed map, which helps make greener lifestyle choices more easily accessible for visitors and residents.

The Golden Trash Awards celebrate sites that are going green, creating a space where the concept of "green" online is recognised and awarded, through the Golden Leaf Awards.

"Cape Town Green Map has joined the Green Map movement – a community of over four thousand local green living sites around the world. Cape Town Green Map is powered by Open Green Map, an interactive mapmaking tool," the organisers of the awards said.

"We’re looking to celebrate the world of green online. We want to award people and sites that are passionate about and ready to stand up for eco-issues that are relevant to today’s cyber communities and the world beyond that. We won’t accept just any old sites – your website is your online face and we expect it to look eco-good! With a strict set of criteria in mind our mission is to distinguish all of the useless junk from the Golden Trash."

The Cape Town Green Map can now display the Gold Leaf Award.
