Landfill sites

The City has three landfill sites. These are:

Coastal Park
This site is off Baden Powell Drive in Strandfontein/Muizenberg. Its footprint is about 75 hectares, with a waste compaction of about 800 - 900 kg/m3. When it is full, the final landform will be between 35 - 45 metres above ground level. Part of phase 1 of the Coastal Park site has had a multi layered lining installed for the landform to go up by another 15 metres. Phase two is currently in operation and daily lifts are 2.5 metres in height. The landform can still go up by another 20 metres. This site will be operational until 2016 - 2022.

Vissershok
This site is off the N7 into Frankdale Rd, adjacent to Morningstar. It is about 117 hectares in size, and will reach about 65m above ground level, once closed. There are various cells on the site of which nearly half are full, while the balance are in advanced stages of filling. The development of Vissershok North will give Cape Town an extra 18 million m3 and about six to nine years of airspace.

Bellville South
The Bellville South landfill, which is located at Sacks Circle, Bellville Industrial, is approximately 60 hectares in size. Thirty hectares are already filled to capacity and the remaining airspace is filling up rapidly. Its current height is about 35m above ground level. The landfill permit stipulates closure by 2013.
