WEF delegates visit Green Point stadium

Delegates of the 18th World Economic Forum on Africa taking place in Cape Town visited the Green Point Stadium construction site on 5 June 2008, and attended presentations on the plans for the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, and the impact of the event on Cape Town, South Africa, and the African continent.

The 50 delegates were accompanied by Dr Danny Jordaan, CEO of the Local Organising Committee, and were able to see for themselves the progress on the site, and how the preparations to host the event are advancing.

According to City of Cape Town 2010 director Teral Cullen, delegates were given presentations on both Cape Town and South Africa’s readiness to host the 2010 FIFA World Cup™. “The presentations were an update on where things are at.”

The three-day WEF meeting is themed “Capitalising on Opportunity”, and the 2010 FIFA World Cup certainly fits this bill.

Co-chairs include Aliko Dangote, president and chief executive of Nigeria's Dangote Group, E Neville Isdell, chairman and chief executive of Coca-Cola, Wendy Luhabe, chairperson of South Africa's Industrial Development Corporation.

The other co-chairs are Sadako Ogata, president of Japan's International Cooperation Agency and Sultan Ahmed Bin Sulayem, chairperson of the United Arab Emirates' major investor, Dubai World.
