Vote for Table Mountain!

Table Mountain, Cape Town, South Africa

When you think of Cape Town, chances are the first image that comes to mind is Table Mountain.

As the Cape’s premier tourist attraction, Table Mountain may now be set to achieve everlasting fame by being listed as one of the seven natural wonders of the world – but it needs your help to do so.

The iconic flat topped mountain has been selected as South Africa’s representative in a campaign organised by Swiss based New7Wonders Foundation to choose the world’s top seven natural wonders from 222 countries, and is the only South African entry to make it to the second round.

The other South African entries that didn’t make it include the Cape of Good Hope, Kruger National Park and Vredefort Crater.

Table Mountain is up against other well-known natural sites, such as the Grand Canyon, Great Barrier Reef, Amazon and Niagara Falls.

As the top seven will be chosen by worldwide votes, you can show your support for Table Mountain by voting for it.

The benefits of having Table Mountain included in the top seven will have far-reaching effects for the city as a whole. These include valuable international exposure and increased awareness.

“Cape Town Tourism is a very proud partner of the campaign and we are confident that Table Mountain will be named as one of the New 7 Wonders of Nature,” says Cape Town Tourism CEO, Mariëtte du-Toit Helmbold.

“The campaign is a wonderful way to elevate our status as top international destination and at the same time get Capetonians more excited about their incredible city.

“Cape Town is iconic, and its most famous landmark, Table Mountain, gives Cape Town immediate international recognition. Very few places in the world can boast a natural heritage site within an urban environment – Table Mountain serves as a reminder of our intimate relationship with the natural world,” she said.

The Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company has formed an official supporting committee to promote Table Mountain as a nominee. “It is now up to the public to vote for Table Mountain,” says Sabine Lehmann, CEO of Table Mountain Aerial Cableway Company.

There are seven sections in the campaign, and Table Mountain falls under the Mountains & Volcanoes section.

Currently, the mountain is listed at number 24 in this section, which is being led by Yu Shan, Mount Everest and Mount Fuji.

In order to increase its ranking in the list, your votes are needed.

Voting runs until July 7 this year, after which a panel of experts will choose the 21 finalists. These will be announced on July 21. The third and final phase of voting will then begin, and the official New 7 Wonders of Nature will be revealed in 2011.

The contest follows the New Seven Wonders of the World project which culminated in the announcement of the new seven wonders in 2007, after over 100 million votes were cast. It is a not-for-profit endeavour that aims to protect the natural wonders of nature, and raise awareness about them.

To find out more, visit www.new7wonders.com , and click on http://www.new7wonders.com/nature/en/nominees/africa/c/TableMountainMountain to cast your vote for Table Mountain.

If you are unable to use the internet, you can call +41 77 312 4041 – a Swiss telephone number, which will incur normal international telephone call rates. Callers can then enter a three-digit code (332 for Table Mountain) to vote for their chosen nominee.
