Soccer fans in Cape Town will have safe, efficient, quality public transport during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™.
The City of Cape Town's transport plan aims to:
- Get fans from the airport into the city by public transport
- Maximise the use of non-motorised transport such as pedestrian movement and cycling
- Provide pedestrian access from the FIFA Fan Fest on the Grand Parade, the city area and
Cape Town Station to Green Point Stadium via Somerset Road.
The rollout of the Integrated Rapid Transport (IRT) infrastructure is also underway.
The first phase of IRT includes the construction of lanes around the city centre along Hertzog Boulevard and around the civic centre, with the precinct also due for a pedestrian upgrade.
In addition, two IRT stations have been earmarked for Hertzog Boulevard and Adderley Street. They will be equipped with a fleet of new public transport vehicles that will be operational from 04.30 until midnight seven days a week. Passengers will use pre-paid smart cards to get around.
Construction of IRT stations in the CBD begins in the second half of this year.
Comprising the city's main transport hub, the stations in the CBD will be linked to the public transport routes from Blaauwberg in the west and Hout Bay in the south. There will also be an inner city feeder service to Sea Point, Camps Bay and Hout Bay.
In future phases, the CBD may be linked to other parts of the city.
The first phase of the project is planned for May 2010. Already R1.32 bn has been allocated to Phase 1A.
