Slower traffic flows expected in Green Point

Granger Bay Boulevard / Green Point Urban Park construction site

The City of Cape Town’s Roads and Stormwater Department has warned motorists travelling in the Green Point area to expect slower traffic flows, due to the closure of one lane of the Western Bypass.

As preparations for the 2010 FIFA World Cup move into higher gear, construction of the new Granger Bay Boulevard (linking Green Point to the V&A Waterfront) and the new traffic circle adjacent to the Green Point Stadium are at an advanced stage.

A new Integrated Rapid Transit (IRT) system bus station is also planned for the centre island between the new traffic circle and the Portswood Road intersection on Western Boulevard, to meet public transport requirements for the event.

In order to facilitate construction in critical areas around the traffic circle and at the Portswood Road intersection on Western Boulevard, it has become necessary to reduce the width of the current bypass that carries traffic around the new traffic circle to only one lane in each direction on a section of the bypass.

This will be in place for three months, as sections of the new road are completed.
“The Roads and Stormwater Department apologises for any inconvenience that might result and gives the assurance that every effort will be made to minimise traffic delays,” said Henry du Plessis, Director: Roads and Stormwater.

He also advised motorists to use other routes where possible, and also to be patient.
“The co-operation of the travelling public when faced with 2010-related road construction has been exemplary and is greatly appreciated,” he added.
