The Coniston Park Recreation Hub was officially unveiled by the City of Cape Town’s Recreation and Amenities Department in Military Road, Steenberg.
The centre offers a variety of activities including free play, modified sports, board games, karate, ballroom dancing, taebo, life skills, aftercare programmes, structured games and other activities for youth and seniors alike.
“Opening the Hub is moment of huge excitement especially after the facility was not accessible to the communities for almost two years due to much-needed restoration and upgrading. It is a fantastic achievement and very exciting as it all came together,” commented Ward Councillor Marita Petersen at the opening on 2 July 2013.
The Coniston Park facility is only one of four hubs in the area and will contribute to changing the lives of many youths and seniors. The intention of this hub is to create a safe, carefree environment for all age groups. The co-ordination of programmes and activities will aim to promote personal development in a fun, yet caring and safe fashion.
A recreation study conducted across the Cape metropole has showed that only 24.6% of adult residents in Cape Town participate in physical activities in their spare time. However, almost 90% of Capetonians feel that sport and recreation is important.
“The focus of the City’s recreation strategy is to offer fun and engaging activities that grab people’s attention, where there is something for everyone on offer. We want to see more and more Capetonians being active and developing their interests,” said Belinda Walker, the Mayoral Committee Member for Community Services and Special Projects.
Members of the community are encouraged to join in the activities and become involved in the programmes on offer. The Coniston Park Recreation Hub is located in Military Road, Steenberg. Queries can be directed to Donald Jansen on 021 788 1929.
