The City of Cape Town intends developing a portion of its land in Pelican Park for lower income housing. The proposed development, on erf 829, will feature 2 000 fully subsidised houses, 950 open market houses, and four hectares of land for mixed residential and business use, together with a secondary school, a primary school and a clinic. Portions of the 80 hectare site will be sold to a developer, who is yet to be identified via a future public ‘call for proposal’ process.
As the estimated value of the land exceeds R50 million, and the development will take longer than three years to complete, the City is legally required to seek public opinion on its intention to sell the land, before deciding on the proposal at a meeting of the Council on Wednesday, 27 October.
Comments will also be sought from the National and Provincial Treasuries regarding the intention to sell the land and the City’s intention to contract with a developer for a period exceeding three years.
