New Cape Town Marathon and 10km route includes parts of fan walk

Runners eager to experience the new 2013 Cape Town Marathon and Cape Town 10km route should enter before the 17:00 deadline on Monday, 9 September 2013.

Organisers have announced that events on Marathon Day, 22 September 2013, will follow new routes – which will include parts of the fan walk – owing to the construction of a MyCiTi Bus terminus in Adderley Street, which traditionally hosts the start.

“As co-hosts of this event with Western Province Athletics, the City of Cape Town is delighted that parts of the fan walk have been incorporated into the new route. This provides an excellent opportunity to showcase the beauty of our city. A setting more beautiful for a city marathon would be difficult to find. We are excited and look forward to welcoming the runners and their supporters,” says the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Tourism, Events and Marketing, Councillor Grant Pascoe.

The 42,2km marathon and 10km race will now start and finish on the forecourt outside the Cape Town Stadium.

The forecourt start and finish brings a slight change to the route, with 42,2km runners exiting Green Point down Somerset Road and along the Fan Walk and the 10km runners doing a loop through the V&A Waterfront.

The marathon will continue on through the CBD, towards the southern suburbs, looping around the Rondebosch Common, before redirecting back to the city bowl via Observatory and Pinelands.

The routes re-unite along the fan walk and take participants along Beach Road, past the Mouille Point lighthouse, and through the Green Point Urban Park to the finish line.

“Entertainment, as well as food and refreshments, will be available for purchase on the Cape Town Stadium forecourt after the race. The City’s ‘Come and Play’ sport and recreation programme will also be available to keep children entertained,” says Councillor Pascoe.
