Local arts & crafts to be showcased

The City of Cape Town’s Lookout Hill Tourism Facility in Khayelitsha is hosting arts & crafts days in November and December to showcase local culture.

The art and craft days, which will run from 28 – 29 November and 15 - 19 December, have been initiated to encourage Capetonians and visitors to experience local arts, crafts, music, dance and food.

“It’s an opportunity for the people of Cape Town and visitors to visit something other than the Big Six [tourist sites such as Table Mountain] and expose them to something different,” says Lookout Hill Tourism Facility manager Sisa Ngondo.

“We wanted to expose Khayelitsha crafters to local and international markets, and then invited other local groups involved in music, theatre and dance to also participate.

“And no cultural event would be complete without food, so a variety of local foods will complete the fair, making it unique to the area and its people."

The  art and craft day will be regular features at Lookout Hill. “We also see this as an opportunity to increase the number of tourists coming to Khayelitsha, and to support artists and crafters, thereby supporting the Khayelitsha economy,” Ngondo said.

The facility, which is located at the corner of Spine and Mew Way Roads in Khayelitsha, is accessible from the N2 highway, and offers panoramic views of the False Bay coastline from Gordon’s Bay to Muizenberg as well as the surrounding mountain ranges. It features exhibition spaces, a restaurant, conference facilities, an amphitheatre and a shop.

Directions:
N2 from Cape Town: Take the Mew Way Road turn-off, at STOP turn right towards Khayelitsha. Drive past first set of robots, straight and past three STOP signs. At the fourth STOP sign (Spine Road) turn left.
