Help the City update its integrated transport plan

The City of Cape Town aims to provide residents and businesses with a world-class, sustainable transport system that moves people and goods effectively, efficiently, safely and affordably.

At the moment, however, more and more people are using private cars, and ‘rush hour’ is almost three hours long. Commuter travelling distances are increasing, and there is a lack of quality public transport and quality non-motorised transport facilities (walking, cycling and universal access).

Transport contributes to just over half of all carbon emissions in Cape Town (causing poor air quality), and we have a high traffic accident rate.

Cape Town is determined to provide an efficient transport system that improves access and mobility in an equitable and sustainable manner.

Transport plays an essential role in ensuring sustainable development and connecting people with opportunities, but this current transport system does not help the City achieve its social, economic and environmental objectives.

The City’s Integrated Transport Plan (ITP), therefore, aims is to provide for and manage future transport demands towards a more balanced transport system that promotes and gives priority to public transport and other alternative modes of transport.

The ITP considers all transport-related issues, such as travel behaviour, tourism transport, freight, transport networks, safety, the road network, the air and sea ports, asset management, the Soccer World Cup, as well as public transport, universal access and no-motorised transport.

The ITP reinforces and complements the City’s spatial plan, economical development strategies and environmental management strategies and plans of the City.

Its overall goals are:

  • shared prosperity;
  • an inclusive and equitable society; and
  • an ecologically sustainable future
  • at least 50% public transport usage

This integrated transport plan started on 1 July 2006 and ends on 30 June 2011. Every year the City will update the plan to ensure that:

1. transport project budgets are aligned with the City’s overall budget;
2. goals and key performance indicators are updated;
3. the plan is aligned with the City’s Five-Year Plan (IDP).

The City is now reviewing and updating the ITP (2006 - 2011). This is your opportunity to:

  • comment on possible shortcomings in the current ITP;
  • submit proposals on addressing these shortcomings;
  • give feedback on the City’s progress and achievements.

Deadline for comments and submissions is Tuesday 20 January 2009.

Please submit your written comments:
