Have you ever wondered how the City develops its vision and identifies development priorities? How does the City come up with strategies to achieve its goals, and plan the way in which our money should be spent?
The answer is through Integrated Development Planning, a five-year cyclical process that helps local governments all over the country make the best of their scarce resources and speed up delivery. Integrated Development Planning also helps councillors make decisions based on the needs and priorities of their communities.
Cape Town has been using an IDP (Integrated Development Plan) since 2002. It is known as the City’s 5 Year Plan, and it includes details about the municipality’s transformation needs, operational strategies and key performance indicators and targets. The plan also commits the City to meeting specific targets over the next five-year period, targets relating to economic development, basic services, housing, public transport, management of City infrastructure and financial management.
Importantly, this 5 Year Plan helps the City achieve its vision of becoming a prosperous, well-governed city, known for effective and equitable service delivery.
