City welcomes flood relief donation 
The City of Cape Town has welcomed a R1.5-million donation from national oil and gas company Petro SA, which will be spent on relief operations for residents affected by the recent heavy rains and flooding.

Petro SA Vice President Operations Dan Marokane presented a cheque to Executive Mayor Helen Zille on Wednesday 10 July.

The donation to the City's Disaster Management Team will help them co-ordinate the supply of food, blankets and other assistance to flood victims.

The Cape Peninsula is recovering from unusually wet weather. The average rainfall for July is 83mm, but Cape Town experienced 93mm in the first week of the month.

This has led to about 30 000 people – and 7 500 structures in 70 informal settlements - being directly affected by flooding.

Approximately 3 000 people have been housed at emergency shelters in community halls. This is on top of the 2 480 displaced people being cared for in five safety zones, and the 1 192 people being sheltered in other community halls. "The NGOs providing disaster relief in partnership with the City of Cape Town are stretched to the limit in supplying adequate hot means and blankets to the flood victims in the community halls and those in the affected areas. Currently some 22 000 meals are been provided twice a day and over 13 000 blankets have been given to the flood victims.

"This illustrates why PetroSA's generous donation of R1.5-million is so welcome," said Disaster Management spokesperson Wilfred Solomons-Johannes.
