Those Capetonians who missed out on a chance to watch a game at the new Cape Town Stadium and take a stroll along the popular Fan Walk have another opportunity to do so – albeit on a smaller scale.
The stadium is to host a celebration event on 27 August 2010 to feature the Cape Town kick-off of the Premier Soccer League (PSL) season.
The event is being billed as a party to which everyone is invited, said Morné du Plessis, the chairman of the stadium operator, SAIL STADEFRANCE, at a media briefing on Wednesday 21 July.
The City of Cape Town wants to thank all residents for their help in making Cape Town the best host city during the 2010 FIFA World Cup™, he said, adding that the City wants the available seats filled with the volunteers and policemen and women who worked during the event; the Fan Fest and Fan Jol revellers who could not get tickets; the school and university students who were out of town; and everyone else in the city. Tickets will be affordably priced.
"The Cape Town Stadium was always built as a venue for all the people of Cape Town. It is an iconic Cape Town asset and a fully inclusive facility for all," Du Plessis said.
Details of the event are still being finalised, but it will feature a double-header soccer game and music before and after the match. The Fan Walk will be activated, and transport to and from the stadium will operate on a similar basis to the World Cup™.
Du Plessis also said the stadium will be hosting a number of events in the coming months, including a Bafana Bafana game, a charity match and an international concert, a New Year's Eve party; the Cape Town Stadium Soccer Festival in February 2011 and the Vodacom Challenge. There are also plans to host rugby fixtures and other events, including religious gatherings, to make the stadium sustainable.
Meanwhile, the stadium Visitors’ Centre will reopen on 3 August.
