"Millions of litres of potable water run to waste daily when pipes burst due to pressure in the system, old and ailing infrastructure or damage resulting from illegal water connections and residents neglect their duty to timeously report the water wastage to the City’s all hours call centre”, says Philemon Mashoko, the City of Cape Town’s Director: Water and Sanitation.
Here are some of the issues which residents are urged to report:
- Burst pipes, mains, leaking fire hydrants
- Illegal water connections and watering of gardens outside stipulated hours
- Illegal use of water (e.g. dampening of building sand)
- Tampering with water connections (standpipes, meters)
The number for the City’s 24hr call centre is 0860 103 089. Residents can also e-mail WaterTOC@capetown.gov.za or sms 31373 (160 characters).
More information on how to save water is available here. Material such as posters and quick reference cards are also available from all City libraries.
Over the next few weeks residents are urged to look out for information and tips on how to be part of the solution for Cape Town by making saving water a way of life.
Save water whilst we still have it.
