2010 lecture at Green Point Visitors' Centre
The Green Point Stadium Visitors’ Centre is to host a lecture entitled “Can the 2010 FIFA World Cup advance social integration in Cape Town? ” as part of its 2010 lecture series.

The lecture, which will be held on Wednesday, 17 June 2009, will be given by Professor Edgar Pieterse, Director: African Centre for Cities, University of the Western Cape. Professor Pieterse will examine the opportunities and risks inherent in mega-events such as the FIFA World Cup, concentrating on the
unprecedented opportunities they provide to accelerate social dynamics and development, and exploring their high risks (due to the costs and time pressures involved).

The central challenge of hosting the FIFA World Cup is to build a broad-based sense of involvement and excitement while using it as a catalyst for progress on a wide range of tough development challenges. “The more we debate what is at the stake, the more likely we are to take responsibility for securing our ambitions,” says Pieterse. “In my talk I will focus on the potential social returns of the 2010 World Cup investments in Cape Town against a backdrop of deep and persistent social cleavages around racial, class and generational lines”.
