Paper tickets are on sale on board all MyCiTi feeder buses and at kiosks at all trunk route stations (cash only) until 20 January 2012, and can be used until 27 January 2012, whereafter they will be replaced by myconnect. They are available in booklets of 10 x R5 tickets. Tickets are non-refundable.
When you board a feeder bus or enter a MyCiTi station, you will need to present a R5 ticket for validation; you will need to present a further R5 ticket when you transfer to a trunk route bus (it’s a good idea to purchase a book of tickets, as you’ll always have a valid ticket with you).
Transfers are free from a trunk route to a feeder service within a MyCiTi station – such as from the Table View trunk route to the inner city route (via the Civic Centre station). However, if you leave a station for any reason in-between trips, such as to shop or get a cup of coffee, you will have to pay the usual fare anew when you re-enter the station (ie you will have left the ‘closed system’).
Al present, the most you will ever pay is R10 for a trip – apart from penalties if you are found without the required validated tickets.
Expiry date
An expiry date is printed on paper tickets. Tickets may only be used until the expiry date.
Ticket validation
When you enter a MyCiTi station or a feeder bus, present your ticket to the conductor. If the bus has no conductor, present your pre-bought ticket to the driver.
The conductor or driver will then validate your ticket. Airport tickets will be validated by conductor clipping or tearing the ticket. On other MyCiTi routes, the conductor will tear off the stub on the right-hand side of the ticket and stamp it or write the date of the trip on the ticket.
If you are found without a validated ticket, you could be fined, unless you have a valid explanation.
If the station kiosk is not staffed, present your pre-bought ticket to the conductor for validation. If you do not have a ticket, purchase one at your destination station, then present it to the conductor for validation.
Ticket inspection
Always keep your ticket available. When requested, present your validated ticket to a MyCiTi official or a law enforcement officer.
If you are found with a MyCiTi station or bus without a ticket:
- you will be required to buy a ticket from an on-board conductor (if available), or
- you may be required to get off the bus to buy a ticket at a MyCiTi station, or
- you may be required to get off the bus or out of a station.
If you are caught trying to evade paying the fare (e.g. by walking into a station without presenting your ticket to a conductor, or by climbing over a station fence) you will be fined or arrested.
