CITY OF CAPE TOWN YOUTH ENVIRONMENTAL SCHOOL (YES) PROGRAMME
YES 2004 will be the 5th YES the City will be hosting from Monday, 31 May to Friday, 4 June 2004 with an Eco-School Teacher’s Workshop on Saturday, 5 June, at the Chrysalis Academy in Tokai.

YES is hosted at the Chrysalis Academy in Tokai with 15 satellite venues: Blaauwberg EE Centre (Blaauwberg Conservation Area – Eerste Steen) Boulders Beach (Cape Peninsula National Park – Simon’s Town) Edith Stephens EE Centre (Edith Stephens Wetland Park – Philippi) Edutrain (Simon’s Town Museum and SA Naval Museum) Environmental Education Resource Unit (Cape Flats Nature Reserve, University of Western Cape, Bellville) Kristo Pienaar EE Centre (Tygerberg Nature Reserve – Welgemoed) Macassar Dunes (Macassar) Mike Woods EE Centre (Helderberg Nature Reserve – Somerset West) Rietvlei EE Centre (Rietvlei Nature Reserve - Table View) Rondevlei EE Centre (Rondevlei Nature Reserve – Grassy Park) Table Mountain (Lower Cableway Station) West Coast Field Studies Centre (Paarden Eiland Wetlands – Brooklyn) Wolfgat Nature Reserve (Tafelsig) Zandvlei EE Centre (Zandvlei Estuary Nature Reserve – Muizenberg) Zeekoevlei EE Centre (Zeekoevlei Nature Reserve – Grassy Park)
There are a total of 48 organisations with 65 presenters who will be presenting 77 different presentations and activities (eg. Rivers for Life, Learn Not To Burn, Drug Awareness, Wetlands, Know Your Birds, Children Living on the Streets, Nature in the City, Discover Science, HIV/AIDS and You).
The programme is open to all primary and special schools in the City of Cape Town and is free of charge.
To ensure that all schools have the equal opportunity to participate, especially our previously marginalised schools, bus transport – two buses per school – are available, free of charge. A total of 237 buses will be used.
On Saturday, 5 June (World Environment Day) an Eco-Schools Teacher’s Workshop will take place at the Chrysalis Academy.
During the week there will be a Teachers’ Resource Centre with 33 exhibitors to assist teachers and schools with learning support materials (most of these resources are for free).
The City employs 40 unemployed youths as ushers for the duration of the YES programme to assist with the logistics of the programme.

YES 2004 represents one of the City’s largest environmental education projects, with regard to participation, in excess of 28 666 learners will benefit from the programme. On average 5 733 learners per day
