Philippi Plaza ushers in a new era of shopping for local residents
MEDIA RELEASE
NO. 904 / 2012
25 OCTOBER 2012

As part of its commitment to building an Opportunity and an Inclusive City which fosters an enabling economic environment, the City of Cape Town is proud to support the grand opening of the new Philippi Plaza Shopping Centre.

The opening will take place at 08:00 on Saturday 27 October with a ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Philippi Plaza is Philippi’s first shopping mall and local residents will no longer have to travel to other areas to buy clothes, accessories and household goods. With over 40 businesses located in the Philippi Plaza, and Spar as an anchor tenant, the opening signals the start of a new era of shopping in Philippi.

Date: Saturday 27 October 2012

Time: 08:00 – 09:00

Venue: Lansdowne Road, between New Eisleben Road and Stock Road, Philippi

All media are welcome to attend.

Despite a population of over 100 000 residents, this area has been historically neglected. However, according to the CEO of the Philippi Economic Development Initiative (PEDI), Thomas Swana, that is all about to change.

“Philippi is the perfect spot for development as the land is reasonably priced, close to the airport and major transport hubs, and has high levels of unemployment. Philippi Plaza is the start of a new phase for this area that will see an investment of over R2 billion in the area. This investment will create opportunities for both local businesses and local residents,” said Swana.

“This Saturday morning will mark the start of the redevelopment of Philippi – an area which has long been overlooked by developers. Philippi Plaza is a great example of how things can happen when developers, residents, the local Council and the various community forums work together. The support of this initiative is part of this administration’s broader plans to build a city in which people can access economic opportunities where they live,” said the City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic, Environmental and Spatial Planning, Alderman Belinda Walker.
