The first swimming pool in Blue Downs will be officially opened on Thursday, 04 February 2010. Chairperson of the Community Services Portfolio Committee, Councillor Garin Cavanagh, will officiate.

Time: 17:30 for 18:00

Venue: Blue Downs Swimming Pool, Hindle Road (Same entrance as Blue Downs Stadium)

All media are welcome to attend.

The Blue Downs Swimming Pool opened to the public on 07 December 2009. It is under the control of the City’s Sport, Recreation & Amenities Department. The pool can accommodate 950 swimmers, and has a further seating capacity of 576 on its stands.

‘Learn To Swim’ programmes take place at the pool and aquatic and synchronised swimming training is envisaged for the future.

The facility is also used by the Khayelitsha Aquatic Club, the Greater Blue Downs Community Based Organisation and the Blue Downs Aquatic Club.

Schools in the surrounding areas will be encouraged to use the facility and make swimming part of their day-to-day activities, rather than just another physical education session.
