MEDIA RELEASE NO. 169/ 2010 09 MARCH 2010
The Mitchells Plain Town Centre walkways are now virtually cleared of all the debris that has collected over the years. Executive Mayor Dan Plato will inspect progress on 10 March.
The Town Centre is on its way to again becoming a bustling economic centre that is safe, secure and financially viable.
On Friday, 26 February 2010 the informal traders were told that they could not trade in the Town Centre without a trading permit, and that they could only trade in the trading bays allocated to them. The walkways needed to be cleared of all their goods and trading infrastructure by Monday 08 March 2010. To a large extent the traders have complied with the City’s notice. Commuters, property owners, retailers and informal traders were all pleased that the walkways are open for pedestrian usage after such a long time. There were a few instances of intimidation, but this was soon resolved through the prompt action by SAPS and City Law Enforcement Officers. The clearing of the walkways and the commencement of trading in the squares and market places will enable the completion of the upgrading of the Town Centre. “I am glad that reason has prevailed in the Town Centre, and that everyone can now work together to enable the Town Centre to become a thriving destination in its own right”, said Alderman Dan Plato.
