Mayor to launch rental unit upgrade in Scottsville
MEDIA RELEASE
NO. 182/ 2010
11 MARCH 2010

The Executive Mayor of Cape Town, Alderman Dan Plato, will on Friday address the tenants of the City’s rental units in Scottsville, as the City’s major rental unit upgrade project will now get underway in their neighbourhood.

Alderman Plato said he is very excited about the launch of the Community Rental Units upgrade in Scottsville. “This project is integral to the City’s plan to provide quality living environments for our residents. This project includes an extensive review and upgrade of the rental units and the enhancement of the surrounding living areas”.

Councillor Shehaam Sims, the Mayoral Committee Member for Housing, said: “I believe that improving the buildings and surrounding areas will lead to an attractive environment with which the residents can proudly associate and that a stronger sense of community will develop as a result.”

Date: Friday 12 March

Time: 09:30

Venue: FF Erasmus Hall, Aandblom Street, Scottsville

All media are welcome to attend.

During Phase One of the project properties will receive both basic refurbishments and upgrades in terms of the national Community Residential Unit (CRU) Policy. This first phase incorporates 7 775 CRU rental properties in 11 project areas across Cape Town. The project areas include rental units in Scottsville, Scottsdene, Manenberg, Heideveld, Hanover Park, Uitsig, Woodlands, Connaught in Elsies River, The Range in Bishop Lavis and Marble Flats in Ottery.

Project funding has been approved by Province for most of the developments. Further funding will be provided by National Government, according to the CRU Policy, and is estimated at over R1 billion for the first phase alone. The project will be rolled out to the various project areas as the funds are received by the City.

The rental unit upgrade project was first launched in Kewtown in January 2010.
