Mayor launches ‘Quality Open Space’ project in Bellville South
MEDIA RELEASE
NO. 745/ 2009
10 NOVEMBER 2009

The City of Cape Town will officially launch the ‘Quality Open Space’ project in Bellville South. Executive Mayor Alderman Dan Plato will officiate.

The project links the 2010 Soccer World Cup to local improvement initiatives. Equally important is the need to extend the existing City programme of providing public open spaces where people can gather and socialise.

Date: Wednesday 11 November

Time: 10:00

Venue: Kasselsvlei Civic Centre, Kasselsvlei Road, Bellville South

All media are invited to attend.

Background to the project
The focus of this project is the creation of a lasting legacy by establishing neighbourhood public places. These spaces are multi-functional and offer scope for new community events to consolidate the existing social calendar.

Communal activities such as trading or exchange of goods and services, demonstrations, celebrations or festivals, mourning or memorial services, dignitaries addressing crowds and ordinary people showcasing their talent are always associated with special public places. Moreover, when communities take ownership of the management of special events, it benefits civil society.

The intention is to complete one public open space in each Sub-council by 2010. The completed spaces will allow a variety of special events and functions to take place. Such events should be initiated and owned by civic organisations under the auspices of the Subcouncil and could include: mini-soccer and other sport tournaments where associated with sport fields; informal trade markets and food courts; funfair activities and entertainment by local artists.
