job centre and industrial park after the City of Cape Town earmarked R6 million for the project.
The City’s Mayoral Committee Member for Economic, Social Development and Tourism, Councillor Simon Grindrod, is to ask Council to approve an agreement with AfriSam, to manage the facility.
"AfriSam has agreed in principle to match the City’s contribution on a rand for rand basis for the operation, management and cleaning of the centre over the next five years," says Cllr Grindrod.
"Macassar desperately needs this development as 70% of the young people between the ages of 16 and 19 years are unemployed. They have limited access to economic opportunities and have no experience or access to finance or premises to start their own businesses," he says.
Once the proposed agreement is approved, the project will be developed in three phases, starting with the training and job centre, then the development of the industrial park, followed by commercial developments.
The proposed partnership with AfriSam will be advertised for public comment before it can be implemented.
