Last chance to have your say on the future of Cape Town’s spatial planning
MEDIA RELEASE
NO. 336 / 2011
22 JUNE 2011

Residents are reminded that they have one week left to comment on the City of Cape Town’s Draft District Spatial Development Plans and Environmental Management Frameworks. These plans, when adopted, will provide spatial development guidelines for Cape Town’s eight planning districts, including identification of new development opportunities, areas for enhancement and protection as well as urban upgrading.

Following comments on the first draft of the eight district plans in August 2009, the City released revised versions of the plans for a final round of public comment in April 2011. The deadline for this final round of public comment is 30 June 2011.

A significant improvement to these draft plans is a new section which provides stronger guidance for decision-making through updated development guidelines at the district and sub-district scales. The plans also provide spatial guidance to the capital investment plans of the City and other government departments. The City of Cape Town has been divided into eight planning districts, namely the Table Bay, Blaauwberg, Northern, Tygerberg, Helderberg, Khayelitsha/Mitchells Plain, Cape Flats and Southern districts.

The District Plans, when finalised, will be approved by Council as Structure Plans in terms of Section 4(10) of the Land Use Planning Ordinance no 15 of 1985. The Environmental Management Frameworks will be submitted to the Provincial Minister for Local Government, Environmental Affairs and Development Planning in terms of the Environmental Management Framework Regulations, 2010 for consideration and adoption, in concurrence with the National Minister of Water and Environmental Affairs.

The final draft District Plan relevant to your area, is available for public inspection at your local library, sub-council offices and the City’s Planning & Building Development Management Department’s district offices or at www.capetown.gov.za/en/sdf
