Informal Trading Unit officers rescue 17-year old girl from abductors
MEDIA RELEASE
NO. 70/ 2010
03 FEBRUARY 2010

Officers Brian Robyn and Vincent Forward of the City’s Informal Trading Unit caught two abductors on the Cape Town Station Deck yesterday, 2 February 2010.

On being alerted by a member of the public, they rushed off to the Station Deck and found a 17-year old female minor being detained against her will in a taxi. The driver, a 39-year old male, and his door-guard, a 23-year old male, had prevented the girl from alighting at her Woodstock drop-off point. They proceeded to further detain her at the Cape Town Station Deck. The panic-stricken minor managed to alert a passer-by.

The two males, residing in Philippi and Lotus River respectively, were detained at the Cape Town Police Station on charges of abduction and indecent assault. When their fingerprints were taken it was discovered that one of the suspects has a warrant out for his arrest on a charge of grievous bodily harm.

The investigation has now been taken over by the SAPS Child Protection Unit.

Shaun Smith, Head of the City’s Informal Trading Unit, said he was pleased that the officers were quick to assist. “They went above and beyond the normal call of duty and we’re very grateful to them for this.”
